This is my STRESS RELIEVER. I really enjoy looking it.
Sometime between 1956 and 1960 Smithwick came out with the THIN 3 1/4" Stick Bait. In 1960 it was named the DEVELS Toothpick. Sometime in the 1960's they added a ball weight on the tail and use a smaller tail hook.
But, in the early years it had not ball weight and relied on the heavy tail hook for desired tail weight. This lure is the earliest of this series. It is stamped simply DEVELS Horse.
They also used this blank early on and added spinners front and rear. They used both hooks the size of the rear hook on the lure above and named the lure: DEVELS Horse Dancer Sinker.
You could make a fantastic display of Early Toothpicks and Dancer Sinkers and not have a lot of money into it.
The Scooter and the Buck & Bawl has always intrigued me. There is just something about the shape and the flat belly.
The Scooter predates the Buck & Bawl as best I can tell. I have seen Scooters with heavy hook hangers but have never seen a Buck & Bawl with the heavy hangers.
Both of these lures were produced and sold into the 1960's and beyond. But the early ones from 1956 to maybe the early 1960's had the eyes FULLY on the bottom. Later ones had the eye half on the bottom and half on the side. I just prefer the OLDER ones with EYES ON THE BOTTOM.
